Panelist Bios

Rashad Williams is an assistant professor in the Urban and Regional Planning Area at the University of Minnesota. William's interdisciplinary research crosses the boundaries of urban planning, urban politics, and the political economy of race to study the urban expressions of the Black reparations movement.

Edward Goetz is the director of Center for Urban & Regional Affairs and a faculty member at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. Goetz specializes in housing and local community development planning and policy. His research focuses on issues of race and poverty and how they affect housing policy planning and development.

Cathy ten Broeke is a public servant and expert in homelessness prevention, currently serving as the Assistant Commissioner and Executive Director of the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness. She has dedicated nearly 30 years to the field, working in direct service, policy, and government at local, state, and federal levels.

Jeff Washburne is a leading expert and consultant in affordable housing and community land trusts, with over two decades of experience in nonprofit management, community development, and policy advocacy in the Minneapolis region. Washburne served as the Executive Director of City of Lakes Community Land Trust and now is Principal Consultant at Everlong Consulting LLC and Partner with Burlington Associates and working with several community land trusts nationally.

Annette Bryant is a core troupe member of zAmya Theater. Bryant's creativity extends across the world to many distinct disciplines. Whether people, plays, speaking engagements, puppetry, healing, laughter or love, Annette lives and creates with care and joy. Annette also goes by the name "Queen Mama," a moniker bestowed on her by her children's friends that reflects her kind and regal spirit. Annette loves using art to share her lived experiences, such as being an unhoused mother, and sees her creativity as a blessing and a way to connect with others.

Kenton Card is a researcher and advocate working to analyze and reform the rental housing system. He is an urban planner, sociologist, filmmaker, and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs and the Minnesota Population Center at the University of Minnesota and Visiting Urban Scholar at the Initiative on Cities at Boston University. 

Kate Derickson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Society and the Director of the Urban Studies program at the University of Minnesota. Derickson specializes in urban studies, environmental justice, and community-engaged research. She is widely recognized for her work exploring how historically marginalized communities can influence urban and environmental futures.

Tara Beard has a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Minnesota. She has worked in municipal, county, and regional government for the past 15 years, in a variety of roles related to land use planning and community development. For the past 5 years, she has specialized in housing policy at the Metropolitan Council in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, where she works with local governments to identify and address the housing needs of their existing and future residents.

Aurin Chowdhury is a Minneapolis politician and community organizer who currently serves as the City Council Member for Ward 12 in South Minneapolis. She is a progressive, first-generation Bengali-American, and the daughter of working-class Muslim immigrants. Aurin has an extensive background in policy work from municipal to state governments and nearly a decade of experience in grassroots organizing and coalition building, which has helped develop relationships at all levels of government.

Marcia Barnes is always pursuing her lifelong love of the arts, particularly the performing arts. Barnes has participated in artistic endeavors beginning at a young age. In addition, she has over 25 years of group facilitation experience. Barnes' work as a facilitator has included Domestic Violence, Conflict Management Systems and Life Skills.

Ryan Allen is a professor at the University of Minnesota with a dual appointment at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and University of Minnesota Extension. His research focuses on housing and community development with an emphasis on the experience of immigrant communities in the U.S. Dr. Allen collaborates with colleagues in Minnesota Extension Community Development on research related to Greater Minnesota, including rural migration trends and housing precarity.

Margaret Kaplan is the Associate Director for Programs and Partnerships at the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs at the University of Minnesota. She has an extensive background in housing and community development, focusing on justice and equitable policy solutions in Minnesota. Previously, Margaret was the president at Housing Justice Center where she was a prominent figure in advocacy for affordable housing and tenant protections and led policy initiatives to advance housing justice throughout Minnesota

Jada Windom is a passionate performing artist. She holds 10+ years of modern, contemporary, liturgical. and hiphop dance experience. As the newest troupe member, Jada played the lead role of Stevie/Adrian in zAmya’s production of DisPlace. Jada grew up in Detroit and has experienced public housing and homelessness. 

Street Voices of Change (Bilise & Kenny) is a group of people with lived experiences of homelessness who come together to work for change in their community. They started meeting in 2006 and their organizing work has included the creation and implementation of the Shelter Residents' Bill of Rights in Hennepin County, free downtown community storage, increase in access to housing case management, and  more. The group holds twice-weekly meetings in Minneapolis, which are led by StreetVoices members. Street Voices of Change ensures that the voices of those impacted most are heard in the work to prevent and end homelessness.
