Join us November 30th for Locked In: A Theatrical Dialogue on Healthcare and Homelessness.
Assumptions and bias, in the context of structural racism, time pressure, and health worker burnout, create clinical encounters that inhibit listening, breed distrust, and ultimately harm of the health of unsheltered populations. Health workers, often unknowingly, also criminalize homelessness and addiction through their reproduction of social forces, such as structural racism, patriarchy, and settler colonialism, that are root causes of health inequities.
zAmya and the Twin Cities Campaign Against Racism developed two scenarios that draw on real-life experiences to explore this problem. We have combined these scenarios with facilitated discussion to create the theatrical workshop, Locked In. The performance draws on the theory and practice of Theatre of the Oppressed to offer an interactive and healing space in which the audience actively participates in reimagining: 1) how the scenarios could be different and 2) the conditions needed to allow for different outcomes.
